Mayor Michael Bloomberg adores Caroline Kennedy but is avoiding any direct comment on the Senate-stakes for fear of scotching her chances or antagonizing Gov. David Paterson, with whom he must transact deadly serious budget business.
But Bloomie's fingerprints are everywhere and her nascent campaign -- after all her mini-campaign is being run by Bloomie consultant Josh Isay.
Postie Maggie Haberman, who knows City Hall as well as any New York reporter, first revealed the involvement of an even bigger Bloomberg fixer:
Deputy Mayor Kevin Sheekey, now Mayor Bloomberg's main political guru, has been working the phones to snare support for Kennedy, sources said. Obama advertising specialist John Del Cecato is also on her team.
Meanwhile, a senior state Democrat told The Post that Charles O'Byrne, a Kennedy family friend who officiated at the wedding and the funeral of Caroline's brother John Jr., was directly involved in Caroline's efforts to win the Senate post.
Our sources confirm the involvement of Sheekey, who was close to late Sen. Pat Moynihan, with one top state Dem saying, "Kevin's into the Caroline thing up to his eyeballs -- It's a Bloomberg-run operation."
And another major Bloomberg aide -- Deputy Mayor Patti Harris, who is even closer to the Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-Indie mayor, is a longtime pal of Kennedy's and has been quietly hawking her candidacy, according to aides to Kennedy's rivals.
Other Bloombergers who are falling behind Kennedy: City education boss Joel Klein and his powerhouse lawyer wife Nicole Seligman (Klein tells us "My wife, who is my main consigliere, is very close to Caroline.") and (reportedly) the fundraising duo of Maureen White, a former DNC finance chair, and her financier husband Steve Rattner, a former Timesman who is bosom buddies with the paper's publisher Pinch Sulzberger.
