First Woman Named As Staff Director On House Appropriations Committee

Rep. David Obey (D-Wis.), chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, has named Beverly Pheto as the new staff director on the powerful panel. Pheto will replace Rob Nabors, who has been nominated by President-elect Barack Obama to be deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget.

According to Obey's office, Pheto will be the first woman to serve as the top staffer on Appropriations in the 143-year history of the committee.

"Beverly is a first class public servant,” Obey said in a statement released by his office. “She is smart, thoughtful, tough and knowledgeable. These are tough and troubling times. To confront them we need the wisdom and judgment of the very best people we can find and Beverly Pheto fits that description.”

Pheto has worked for the Appropriations Committee since 2001, most recently as clerk for the Homeland Security subcommittee during the last two years.

Pheto first went to work at OMB in 1985. From 1996 to 2001, she served as budget director for the Department of Transportation, then moved to Capitol Hill.
