Fossella Gets Five Days In Jail

The embarrassing chapter of Vito Fossella's drunk driving arrest has ended with a five day jail sentence.

A Virginia District Court judge sentenced Fossella to 180 days in jail, with 175 days suspended, ordered Fossella to pay a $300 fine, do time in an alcohol safety action program and suspended his drivers license for a year. Fossella's May 1 charge this year led to the unraveling of his political career, as the DUI arrest led to the revelation that he had fathered a child in an extramarital affair. He chose not to run for re-election.

Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney David Lord told Politico Monday afternoon that Fossella has 10 days to appeal his conviction and sentencing, otherwise he'll have to report to jail in Alexandria, Va., on Dec. 19.

That means his sentence would end on Christmas Eve.
