Google Insights into Campaign 2010

On the eve of the midterm election, pollsters, analysts and spin doctors are predicting how the nation will vote. Of course, voters can be unpredictable, and some races appear to be extremely close. We looked at some of the recent trends and issues underlying the election, using Google Insights to look at patterns gleaned from web searches over the last 30 days.

The deficit, health care and financial reform barely register compared to the overall economy and jobs over the last 30 days of web searches, according to Google Insights data. This is consistent with what has been on the minds of voters during this election season--jobs and the economy.

Web searches for "Republican," "Democrat" and "Tea Party" over the last 30 days in the U.S. indicate substantial interest in the Tea Party, which has captured a lot of media attention. Over the last 30 days, searches for "Republican" are about 5 percent higher than searches for "Democrat."

The tight Nevada senatorial race is reflected in the web searches for incumbent Democrat Harry Reid and Republican challenger Sharron Angle.

Among the powerful players on the Democratic and Republican teams, current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Harry Reid far outpace Republican leaders John Boehner and Mitch McConnell in web searches. The trend may change if the Republicans succeed in taking over the House leadership and Reid loses his Nevada Senate seat.

Web searches for potential or speculated Republican candidates for President in 2012 over the last 30 days indicate far more curiosity about Sarah Palin than others.
