Katie Couric's Notebook: Graham Gardner

I went to a memorial service on Saturday for someone who was 22.

Graham Gardner had cerebral palsy and died of a seizure and cardiac arrest on Super Bowl Sunday. He was swimming with his dad, one of his favorite things to do. He couldn't speak and needed assistance doing just about everything...but he could swim...and ski...and windsurf...ride horses...and kayak..often on equipment adapted for people who do things a little differently.

His mother and father..Cynthia and Steven..fiercely and passionately poured every ounce of their beings into giving their only child a life of joy and accomplishment. All who spoke from his music therapist to his best friend said he was a shining light who reflected all that love he absorbed.

Graham showed us a life without limits, the strength of our differences - that kindness makes the heart fill up and flower.

But it must be cultivated, and that's what the Gardners did as a special and beautiful boy grew into an extraordinary man who embodied the power of love.

That's a page from my notebook.

I'm Katie Couric, CBS News.
