Report: Becerra In Talks For USTR

California Congressman Xavier Becerra is in talks with President-elect Barack Obama's transition team for the post of U.S. Trade Representative, the Associated Press reports. As a member of Congress since 1992, Becerra voted for NAFTA in 1992 but later said he regretted that vote. He has opposed the Bush Administration on fast track authority and the Central American Free Trade Agreement.

Trade was an important component of the Democratic presidential primary, particularly in the Ohio primary and Mr. Obama has said he would like to renegotiate NAFTA and has called for better labor and environmental standards for future trade agreements.
