Former Republican Senator Rick Santorum revealed Friday night he is considering a run for president, according to a report.

Speaking at an invitation-only event for Catholic leaders, Santorum said he was "thinking about it" when asked about a potential 2012 bid, according to LifeSiteNews.com. He reportedly asked for the audience's prayers on the matter.

"Six months ago I would not have spent ten seconds on your question, but it's not six months ago," the former senator said at the Catholic Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla. "I see that, I hate to be calculating, but I see that 2012 is not just throwing somebody out to be eaten, but it's a real opportunity for success."

Santorum represented Pennsylvania in the Senate for two terms and served as chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, but the conservative Republican lost his seat in 2006 to Democrat Bob Casey by a wide margin.

The former senator is scheduled to make a series of appearances in Iowa this fall, indicating he may be seriously mulling a run for president.
