'Soup' Host: Where's My Oscar?

Fans of those crazy daytime talk shows probably are acquainted with John Henson, host of Talk Soup on E! Entertainment Television.

In January 1995, he took on the daunting task of filling the shoes of Greg Kinnear, the program's original host, who left the series to launch a successful movie career.

After four years of filling Kinnear's seat, Henson quips, "I'm waiting for my Oscar nomination." (Kinnear was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in As Good As It Gets.)

Henson, who also is a writer for Talk Soup, says he himself is often perplexed by the excerpts from daytime talk shows and their volatile guests.

"I'm always amazed by [them]," Henson told CBS This Morning Co-Anchor Mark McEwen during an interview at the Television City restaurant in New York. "It's like: 'I'm cheating on my husband and he doesn't know it.' Well, let's hope he doesn't have a TV, because you just told 200 million people. He's gonna find out!"

Talk Soup staff members watch more than 17 hours of television per day, looking for moments to feature on the program, which is now in its seventh year. For a change of pace, the program is making a brief visit to Australia to round up the talkfests from "Down Under." ("We're going to Australia because it's free," Henson quips.)

Under Henson's direction, Talk Soup has won an Emmy and branched out into sketch comedy. That's not surprising when one considers that Henson's background is in theater. He studied acting at Boston University, Circle in the Square, Playwrights Horizons, and Three of Us Studios. He has starred in stage productions including Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Godspell, Conduct Unbecoming, Heinous Crimes and Other Delights, The Greenhouse Effect, and Remote Evolution.

As a standup comedian, his TV credits include Stag (HBO), Stand Up, Stand Up and Two Drink Minimum (both Comedy Central), Fools For Love (VH-1), Blind Date (MTV), and Caroline's Comedy Hour (A&E).
