5025813Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus's health care bill was "very bipartisan," but ultimately just a "baby step" in the effort to overhaul the nation's health care system, GOP Chairman Michael Steele said Thursday on CBS' "The Early Show".
Steele added that he doesn't think Republicans will back the bill, which was also written by two other Democrats and three Republicans.
Additionally, Steele fears that insurance cooperatives put forth in the bill are merely a "back door to a public option."
Baucus first laid out his policy vision (PDF) for health care 10 months ago. More than three months ago, he began dealing in closed-door negotiations with six — and later just five — members of the Senate Finance Committee. Now, however, the senator must come face to face with the other 17 members of his committee, some of whom have expressed serious misgivings with his bill.
