Turn Out The Lights

This column was written by CBS News Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith.

Remember when Don Meredith used to sing near the end of "Monday Night Football" years ago: "Turn out the light, the party's over. They say that all good things must end."

You could almost hear that refrain drifting through the halls of power in Washington this morning as word spread that Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez had resigned.

Members of President Bush's posse are dropping like flies: Karl Rove, Gonzales, Rummy, Dan Bartlett. I wonder if it's getting lonely around the campfire down in Crawford?

And lest anyone think the president might actually be bending to the will of the public or angry Democrats — or even disappointed Republicans — think again.

If you were to listen to rest of that old Willie Nelson song, you'd have heard this lyric, too: "And tomorrow starts the same old thing again."

Harry's daily commentary can be heard on many CBS Radio News affiliates across the country.
