U.S. Restores Relations With Libya

This column was written by CBS News Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith.

Now that the United states is establishing diplomatic relations with Libya, we'll all probably want to go on vacation there soon.

I hear they have incredible pristine beaches there. No, really — beautiful beaches on the calm hurricane free Mediterranean. This could be a developers dream — condos, golf courses.

There may be a few drawbacks though. Exiled Libyan political activists are outraged. They say this shows the U.S. is more interested in oil than democracy and that Gadhafi will just use this to tighten his grip on the Libyan people.

So don't look for a Hard Rock to be opening in Tripoli soon, though I hear there's a great exhibit of the colonel's fashion forward costumes you don't want to miss.

Harry's daily commentary can be heard on manyCBS Radio News affiliates across the country.
