Williams, Yanks To Meet Again

NEW YORK -- Bernie Williams' agent met with Yankees owner George Steinbrenner again Friday and said the sides will resume talks next week.

"Bernie's very open to strongly looking at New York and George is interested in having Bernie back," agent Scott Boras said. "We exchanged a lot of information."

Forum: Will Williams return to the Yankees?

  • Boras met with Steinbrenner at a Cleveland hotel for about 15 minutes and spent about 45 minutes on the telephone with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman. Boras then traveled to Atlanta to meet with San Diego Padres officials and pitcher Kevin Brown, and said he will meet this weekend in Atlanta or Miami with officials from another team -- he wouldn't identify which one -- to discuss Williams.

Williams and Boras are to meet with the Red Sox on Monday. The Arizona Diamondbacks already have met with the center fielder.

"The marketplace is very aggressive for Bernie," Boras claimed. "He's narrowed his choices to teams he's very comfortable playing for. It's a matter of looking inside the deals and negotiating to the satisfaction of what Bernie feels is appropriate, and going from there."

Boras and Steinbrenner had their first face-to-face meeting over Williams on Thursday. The Yankees, according to a source, offered a $60 million, five-year contract that was rejected.

Boras is insisting on a contract of at least seven years nd an average annual value higher than $13 million -- the average of Mike Piazza's $91 million, seven-year contract with the New York Mets.

"We left it that we're going to talk next week," Boras said.

In case Williams chooses to sign elsewhere, the Yankees have been talking with the agents for Albert Belle and Brian Jordan. In addition, they have thought about possible trades for Jim Edmonds, Ray Lankford and Rondell White.
