The couple became engaged in April 2012, but didn’t marry till Aug. 23, 2014.

Maddox was adopted from an orphanage in Cambodia by Jolie while she was still married to Billy Bob Thornton. Jolie and Pitt added to their family by first adopting Zahara from Ethiopia in 2005 and then Jolie giving birth to Shiloh in 2006 in Namibia. The couple subsequently adopted Pax Thien from Vietnam in 2007. Their twins, Knox Léon and Vivienne Marcheline, were born in 2008.

On February 16, 2013, Jolie had a preventive double mastectomy after learning she carried a gene that made it extremely likely she would get breast cancer. The Oscar-winning actress made the announcement in an op-ed she authored for The New York Times under the headline, “My Medical Choice.”
