Cannes: Hardy, Chastain bow with "Lawless"

Hardy, who starred in "Bronson," "Inception," "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," and the upcoming "The Dark Knight Rises," stars in the Depression-era drama about bootleggers.

LaBeouf plays the younger, less violent brother of a trio of Appalachia bootlegging brothers protecting their backwoods freedom from a savage lawman from Chicago (played by Guy Pearce).

LaBeaouf has appeared in the "Transformers" franchise, "Holes," "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps," and "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle."

"I've made a lot of movies about plot and device," said LaBeouf. "Now I find myself being attracted to - and being allowed to make - more movies about people and characters."

In addition to "Lawless," LaBeouf is also at the festival with a short he directed, "Howard Cantour.com," about a film critic.

Cave, who worked with director John Hillcoat on the 2005 Australian western "The Proposition," adapted "Lawless" from Matt Bondurant's 2008 historical novel, "The Wettest County in the World." The project was in Hollywood purgatory for two years after losing studio backing.
