“What if the Hulk was a Duke?” French photographer Sacha Goldberger’s photography series “Super Flamands” (“Super Flemish”) reimagines comic superheroes and sci-fi stars in 17th century-style portraits from the Flemish school of painting.

The photographs show an amazing attention to detail, featuring meticulous period costumes, and simulating 17 century lighting techniques “to illustrate nobility and fragility of the super powerful of all times.”

The characters, from Spiderman, Superman, to Snow White and Chewbacca, are cast as nobles, yet there is something vulnerable and fatigued in their poses.

These photos are hyperrealistic, yet amazingly, were made the old fashioned way. While digital imaging was used to add some final polish, Goldberger pulled off these portraits using months of live makeup, prosthetics and costuming.
Sacha Goldberger has published eight books chronicling different aspects of life interpreted by his quirky imagination.
The series on superheroes was exhibited at the "School Gallery Olivier Castaing" along with a selection of the costumes in Paris as well as Paris Photo in 2014.
